If A Democrat wants to Privatize Social Security, He/She Needs to Lose Their Congressional Seat in 2006

The battle lines regarding Social Security are being drawn as I write this. Josh Marshall, on his weblog, Talking Points Memo, has written a poignant letter to a card-carrying DLC member, gently urging him to rethink his position, if not for himself, then for the sake of his large constituency who are dependant on those Social Security checks for their very survival. Isn't making Medicare nearly useless to Seniors enough these days, without adding the burden of privatizing their hard earned retirement funds?

I have been following Josh Marshall on the subject of Democrats and Social Security, and Daily Kos and MyDD blogs on the chairmanship of the DNC. Apparently Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are thinking of pushing Tim Roemer for DNC Chairman. (He was one of the Dems on the 9/11 Commission.) One of these two blogs has listed Tim Roemer's votes on many issues, and he might as well not be a Democrat.
Apparently many people from organizations like Moveon.org, who worked very hard for and gave lots of money toward the election of Kerry, have pledged to withdraw their support from the DNC if Roemer or anyone like him is selected. I tend to agree with them. As a realist, I have never advocated voting for a third-party candidate; but I am quite dismayed and annoyed at elected Democrats and the DNC treating the Democratic base like dirt. Frankly, I think they have internalized the constant harping and twitting of the Republican message machine and made Democrats into a parody of themselves. They are becoming the party of of Alan Colmes.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Why do I always get an urge to choke Alan Colmes for not clocking Hannity by now continues to amaze me.

As far as I'm concerned, we have a battle that progressives can win outright, and that's Social Security. Even AARP, who pushed through that awful Medicare bill, is lining up to fight the privatization of Social Security. Probably because that's a loss of revenue for the organization if Seniors start investing their retirement in private accounts...

And the DLC members have their hands all over this issue, most notably indicating their support for privatization, and most of them represent districts where at least 50% or more of their constituents are dependant on Social Security for their very survival. That's who we need to keep the heat on.
